This is probably the end of an era for gaming enthusiasts. Sony Entertainment Corporation, the company that manufactures and produces the PlayStation 2 (PS2), will now stop production of the console. Though the PS2 console will be discontinued, the games that require a PS2 will not.
The PlayStation 2 is the second-best selling console of all time with more than 150 million units sold worldwide. It has been one of the most successful consoles to be launched and imbibed into the gaming world. The news of Sony’s halt in production of the PlayStation 2 fuels rumors of the company preparing to launch its next-generation console, the PlayStation 4. What Sony has in store for gamers is yet to be seen, but if the rumors are to be believed, gaming enthusiasts are going to be very pleased in the near future.
The PlayStation 2 was first released in the year 2000 (March – Japan, October – North America and November – Europe). Its main contenders at that time were Sega’s Dreamcast, Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo’s GameCube. Sony’s PlayStation series is still one of the best consoles to have ever been released in the gaming world. Stunning visuals, amazing hardware and comfortable controllers make the gaming experience feel like heaven on a PlayStation.
Sony’s current console, the PlayStation 3, was released in the year 2006 and has sold 70 million units worldwide.
